Towards an Ecological and Economic valorization of the Azorean Forest – FOREST-ECO , is a project of scientific content, which began on November 18th of 2016, and intends to quantify the ecological and economic value of the Azores forest, and suggest measures In order to, in the future, value and use forest resources in a sustainable way.

FOREST-ECO , Mission:

An integrated approach will join Ecology and Economy, thereby enhancing research relevance towards Regional and European policies.The project would contribute to fulfill existing gaps in the present knowledge about the role of forests, particularly on islands, and of their sustainable economic potential, in line with the recently defined strategies at Regional and European levels.

The FOREST-ECO approach, integrating Ecology and Economy, aims to answer two main questions:

(i) What are the ecosystem services and the economic gains presently associated with the forest in the Azores?
(ii) How could they be maintained or further increased while assuring sustainability (ecological and economic)?

FOREST-ECO , global goals:

(i) Quantify the Ecological & Economic value of the Azorean forest.
(ii) Suggest measures that further value forest resources, sustainably.

Study area:
​
FOREST-ECO will focus on a gradient of forest types in the Azores: natural forest; exotic woodland; production forest; recreational forest reserves (a mix of the previous types).
A gradient of forest types in the Azores will be studied in three islands: São Miguel, Terceira, Pico.

Funding / Financiamento:

The FOREST-ECO project (no. ACORES-01-0145-FEDER-000014), which will last 3 years, is financed in 85% by the Operational Program AZORES 2020 and 15% by the Budget of the Autonomous Region of the Azores , through the DRCT.
O projeto FOREST-ECO (n.º ACORES-01-0145-FEDER-000014) irá ter uma duração de 3 anos, sendo financiado em 85% pelo Programa Operacional AÇORES 2020, e em 15% pelo Orçamento da Região Autónoma dos Açores, através da DRCT.

The project will be carried out within the framework of the Center for Research on Biodiversity and Genetic Resources - Polo Azores (CIBIO-Açores) of the University of the Azores, and the beneficiary entity responsible for administrative and financial management is the Fundação Gaspar Frutuoso FP.
A execução do projecto decorrerá no âmbito do Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos – Polo Açores (CIBIO-Açores) da Universidade dos Açores, e a entidade beneficiária a quem compete a gestão administrativa e financeira é a Fundação Gaspar Frutuoso FP.
